Brahmaputra Cultural Foundation (BCF) is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2013 (under the Societies Act). It is a space of and for community participation, leadership, well being, education through arts and culture. While we preserve and promote cultural traditions, practices of North-east India, we also showcase the best practices in the field of performing and visual arts from all over the world.
The foundation aims at striking a balance between the flows of traditional and modern knowledge and addresses the social, cultural and developmental conflicts. Cultural exchanges, residencies, workshops, research-based work, performances, festivals and archives have been the core areas so far. Our strength is our deep- rooted intention and a diverse team of artists, environmentalists, scholars, managers, village elders, farmers, youth and leaders.
We have three Ecoversities in three districts of Assam (Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli) and an ongoing curation of a Museum of folk instruments at the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre in Guwahati. The Ecoverse of NOI Center in Jorhat town, is built with the spirit of family and to develop the feeling of family. This venue has performances, different ways of creative expressions, workshops, residencies and learning programmes of contemporary dance, theatre, folk songs, folk instrument making and playing, Sattriya dance, Borgeet, Khol and Yoga. It is located in the vegetable garden of its founder, Shilpika Bordoloi and is the Centre of her Theatre/Dancer Repertory Collective.
Bhumi Centre located in Golaghat district operates out of a Naam-ghar. It is a centre of the traditional art forms of Assam. Here we are directly engaging with our connection to Sankari cultural heritage.
Karsang Centre in Majuli is working with Mising indigenous pedagogy. The Mising communities songs, dances, practices, ceremonies are the primary focus here.
Our work has started without really having any big funding sources so far and has developed on the collective fabric of love, empathy and service. Be a part of our movement. Support us, give us strength, and donate for our cause. Kindly contact us at bcfindia13@gmail.com or ring us at +91 84730-65404.
A lot of our creative expressions are based around our continually evolving work called Katha Yatra – a research-based understanding of river Brahmaputra.
The impressions and understandings of art, culture, bio-diversity, identity, migration, displacement, development, the hopes and aspirations of the people inhabiting the banks of the Brahmaputra, is encapsulated in the project – which is part documentation and part re-imagination of the cultural, identity and environmental landscape of the river.
A Contemporary Theatre/Dance Performance piece called “Majuli”, a short film called “Nature of Nescience”, an Artistic Residency called “Katha Yatra II – Boat on Wheels”, a video documentation work called “Lore” are the artistic manifestations so far.
We are also working in other states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. Bamboo bodies is our emergent work from Mizoram where we are re-imagining the forgotten maternal histories of Mizoram, becoming bamboo in climate crisis.
